How to improve the carbon footprint of Quebec food processing companies? And above all, where do we start? In an article published in the magazine L’Actualité alimentaire in 2022, several experts from Inno-centre offer advice to entrepreneurs in this industry.

To understand how the concept of sustainable development applies to businesses, Inno-centre refers to the "triple bottom line index" developed by John Elkington. According to this model, sustainable objectives include the respect of the environment, people’s well-being and the company’s profitability.

Why is it useful and important to coordinate your company's initiatives into a sustainability plan? "Because the big chains are going to require changes. Some chains, like Costco, already have strict requirements, particularly on packaging."

1st step: Reduce the company’s energy consumption

In the food processing industry, the largest part of the ecological footprint of companies is related to energy consumption, more precisely to the energy related to the different heating and cooling systems, but also to the conveyors, ovens and compressors on the production line.

"Mid-sized companies should consider connecting their production line to production control software (PCL) to get real-time, accurate data about it."

Inno-centre encourages businesses to sign up for Hydro-Québec's Efficient Solutions Program, which offers businesses of all sizes financial support and technical assistance for implementing energy efficiency measures.

2nd step: Map processes to identify losses

"What matters, in order to increase operational efficiency and have loss reduction goals, is to initially map processes with quality, complete and accurate information."

"In addition to guiding changes in production, mapping will ensure a consistency that is necessary in terms of product quality."

3rd step: Set measurable goals and establish clear priorities

"If the company is working to increase its productivity, it is because it aims to produce more with fewer resources."

"Obtaining certifications or meeting standards can generate business opportunities with customers, but also help develop new markets and distinguish the company from its competitors. Just think of organic, carbon neutral... or ISO standards."

4th step: Establish realistic timelines and involve all teams in the company

"At Inno-centre, we strongly advise producing an annual sustainability report, even if it is very brief to begin with. Share it with your employees, but also with your partners and customers to showcase your company's good work."
